Bosnian-Croat war crimes suspect Slobodan Praljak 'takes poison' in UN court. Moments after his conviction is upheld, Slobodan Praljak drinks from a small bottle and shouts "I am not a war criminal". Praljak's lawyer said the 72-year-old "had taken poison" and presiding judge Carmel Agius called for a doctor and halted the proceedings at The Hague. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Landale, UN War Crimes Tribunal spokesman "Well, I can confirm that General Ademi is now in the custody of the tribunal. He has arrived at the detention unit here in the Hague. He voluntarily surrendered himself to the tribunal this morning, and upon his arrival in the Netherlands the seal on his indictment was lifted and so we now know that he has been charged with crimes against humanity and violation of the laws of the customs of war for his part, as a commander, during a Croat army offensive in the Medak pocket in 1993." 12. Cutaway International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia sign 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Florence Hartman, Spokeswoman for Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte "Well, we had two indictments pending in Croatia - one is solved with the voluntarily surrender of Mr Ademi but we have still another one. And the prosecutor today decided to request for it (indictment) to be unsealed and we are waiting for the decision of the judges to make public the second indictment as served to Zagreb at the beginning of June. We hope that the Croatian authorities will arrest him as soon as possible, in fact immediately." 14. Wide shot of General Ademi's lawyer, Cedo Prodanovic, sitting in hotel 15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Cedo Prodanovic, General Ademi's lawyer "I would say it was his own decision (to surrender voluntarily). He suggested to his family and he spoke with me and he decided to come. And obviously he is convinced that he has no reason to escape and he will try to prove his innocence to the court." 16. Mid shot of lawyer sitting in hotel STORYLINE: A Croatian army general has surrendered to the U-N War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. General Rahim Ademi is the first Croat to face charges stemming from the four-year Serbo-Croat war, which ended in 1995. He's accused of overseeing a wartime campaign that left 70 Serb civilians dead and hundreds of homes in ruins. Ademi, wearing his military uniform and medals, flew with his wife and a lawyer from Zagreb to Amsterdam on Wednesday. He was escorted from the scheduled Croatian Airlines flight by three plain clothed policemen. The convoy pulled out of the terminal for the half-hour drive to The Hague, the seat of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. He was received by Dutch police and taken to the U-N detention unit near The Hague, where he was placed in custody. Ademi is expected to make his first appearance before the tribunal on Thursday to enter a plea. "I will prove my innocence. I believe in justice," he said before leaving Zagreb. The tribunal, which kept the indictment secret until Wednesday, published charges that included five counts of crimes against humanity and of violating the laws of war. The indictment has specifically charged him with murder, persecution and the plunder of property during eight days in September 1993. It added that some of the atrocities were committed after the Croatian army signed a ceasefire with Serbian forces. The spokeswoman for Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte said there was another indictment pending in Croatia. The second suspect is widely believed to be retired General, Ante Gotovina. Ante Gotovina had been on the run for four years before he was apprehended on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Although widely seen as a hero by his compatriots for his military exploits, he fell out of favour with Croatia's new leaders after refusing to co-operate with war crimes investigators. Gotovina was in charge of Operation Storm, the campaign to recapture the breakaway region of Krajina from rebel Serb forces. ... http://www.euronews.net/

Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac were sentenced for their roles in the four-year war between Croatia and Serbia, started when Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia. In August 1995 they launched Operation Storm, seizing back control of Croatia's Krajina region from ethnic Serb separatists. More than 300 Serbs were killed in the operation and about 90,000 were forced to flee. Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan reports. Subscribe to Vesti News https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa8MaD6gQscto_Nq1i49iew?sub_confirmation=1 The tragedy that can be called the main event of the week. Croatian general Slobodan Praljak, having heard the guilty verdict with the punishment of 20 years in prison at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, took out a bottle of poison, and no one knows where it came from, opened it and, with the words, "Praljak is not a war criminal! I reject your verdict," drank the deadly liquid. The Hague Tribunal is a kangaroo court established by the UN Security Council’s decision in 1993. At that time, Russia's foreign policy was still naïve and credulous about the intentions of the West, that's why we voted "yes" at the Security Council, hoping for fairness in the international investigation of war crimes during the break-up of Yugoslavia and the civil wars there. In response, we ran into treachery. The Tribunal clearly selectively focused on Serbs and Serbian politicians. The processes were long and obviously tendentious. As a result, ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic died in 2006 in the Hague jail, never hearing his verdict.

Renewable energy is a topic that has yet to top the political agenda in Croatia, with only a handful of local projects addressing climate change-related issues. The International Climate Protection Initiative is now intervening to get Croatia's counties cooperating to boost green practices. But in developed nations, adopting measures to tackle climate change tend to require high investment. Once they're up and running, however, they not only improve quality of life, but also provide a boost to local economies. Croatia is starting to wake up to the benefits of environmental awareness.
