SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) General Rahim Ademi, Croatian War General "There were some pressures for me to make this decision. Mid shot exterior terminal STORYLINE: A Croatian army general has travelled to the Netherlands to surrender to the U-N War Crimes Tribunal where he faces charges of overseeing a war-time campaign that killed about 70 Serb civilians and destroyed hundreds of homes. General Rahim Ademi is the first Croat to face charges stemming from the 1991-95 Serbo-Croat war. According to a United Nations report, one of the more gruesome atrocities involved ten Croatian soldiers who sprayed an 84-year-old blind woman with gunfire as she sat on the porch of her home. Wearing his military uniform decorated with medals, Ademi, his wife, Anita, and his lawyer travelled on a regular Croatian Airlines flight to Amsterdam. Ademi will be taken from Amsterdam's airport to the tribunal in The Hague. He boarded the flight without handcuffs or a police guard because he decided to surrender voluntarily. His two daughters were at the airport to bid him farewell. "I am proud of my role in the war," he said before he left. "I am not afraid of The Hague court's accusations. I have done nothing wrong in the war and I will prove it there. My conscience is completely clear." The tribunal indicted Ademi, along with another high-ranking Croatian officer, and demanded that both suspects be handed over for trial. Croatia's pro-Western government agreed to comply, but its decision triggered fierce protests by veterans and nationalists who supported the late President Franjo Tudjman. They see Croatian fighters as heroes and patriots, not criminals. The second suspect - widely believed to be retired General Ante Gotovina - has indicated a refusal to surrender and his loyalists have threatened unrest if he's arrested. A warrant has been issued for his arrest but he remains at large. 1st of July of 2013. This is the date in when Croatia will become the 28th member of the European Union. Exactly 8 years after its initial bid, accession talks between the ex-yugoslav country and the Union were finalized on Wednesday. Now, the 300 page long treaty is set to be signed by all European heads of state during the upcoming summit in Brussels. Unlike Romania and Bulgaria's accession in 2007, Croatia's treaty does not include a "safeguard clause" that would slow down the process if final requirements were not met by the croatian state. But recent scandals of corruption will see the Union closely monitoring Croatia's battle against corruption. In 2009, the former prime minister Ivo Sanader was accused of fraud as he allegedly sent money from state-own companies to a fund for personal use. Croatian authorities have independently decided to hold a referendum on the EU membership. Recent polls showed that 61% of Croats would vote in favour. The prospect of EU membership comes straight after elections were held last week. Recession, high unemployment and scandals of corruption removed the center-right party from power after it was in office for nearly two decades. Instead, the newly formed center-left coalition Kukuriku won the elections and will govern with Zoran Milanovic, a 45- year-old lawyer and former diplomat, as the next premier. Kukuriku also is enthusiastic about membership of the union, so the change of government is not going to turn Croatia's back on EU membership.

The results of the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence may be seen today in villages populated by Serb refugees who were driven out of Krajina, or by visiting a cemetery in Vukovar. Vukovar is considered by many as a symbol of the Yugoslav nation's suicide. The picturesque city on the Danube was reduced to rubble during a three-month siege by the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army and local Serb militia in 1991. All non-Serbs were expelled from Vukovar, and some 200 patients from a local hospi… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/02/03/croatia-and-serbia-s-unforgettable-bloodshed What are the top stories today? After all, you work away trying to get support and run long campaigns that aren’t always successful. Even if you do win, running a city, state or federal government can be quite a challenge. You have to direct huge sums of money to various projects and departments, try to get along with other politicians, keep things balanced and maintain a squeaky-clean image for the public. The slightest slip or mistake is sure to attract media attention and at the end of it all, no matter how well you’ve done, there will always be a large group of the population who don’t like you. Is it worth it? It must be because people keep doing it year after year. When we think of politicians it’s natural to immediately think of some old guy in a suit with a plastic smile, Lego hair and a briefcase. The reality can actually be very different depending where you live. In many countries, women now make up a growing proportion of the political workforce. Most of you are probably familiar with the likes of Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton. However, there are many more women working around the world at all levels of government. As you’ll see by the following cases, some of these politicians don’t look like your typical suit-wearing bureaucrat. These beauties are sure to turn some heads on the floor of their legislatures because they are the sexiest women in politics. Martic addressing troops STORYLINE: The Yugoslav war crimes tribunal convicted a wartime leader of Croatia's rebel Serbs of murder, torture and persecution on Tuesday and sentenced him to 35 years in prison for a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign of non-Serbs in Croatia. Judges said Milan Martic, 52, was responsible for hundreds of murders from 1991 when Serbs in the Krajina region of northeastern Croatia rebelled and set up a breakaway ministate until 1995 when Croatian forces recaptured the area. He also was convicted of ordering two days of indiscriminate cluster bomb shelling of the Croatian capital, Zagreb, in May 1995 that killed at least seven civilians and injured more than 200. Judge Moloto said that Martic was entitled to credit for time spent in detention which, as of the date of the judgement, amounted to 1,855 days. Martic, who made no comment throughout the hearing, stood still and showed no emotion as Moloto read out the verdict and his sentence. The three-judge UN panel said Martic was deeply involved in a criminal plot with other Serb leaders. Predrad Milanovic, Milan Martic's defence lawyer, said he did not understand the conviction. When they fled, Serbs moved into their homes, Moloto said. Please Subscribe to keep us going! Official Site: http://www.strainhunters.com http://www.greenhouseseeds.nl Facebook http://facebook.com/greenhouseseeds & http://facebook.com/strainhunters.official Music by: Marlon Parkes aka Bobo Shanty https://marlonparkes.wordpress.com/ Here we go again! We board a flight from Amsterdam and in 9 hours we are in the Caribbean. After a layover of just a couple of hours on Curacao, we fly on to Jamaica. We land in Kingston around 11 am local time. The air is hot, but not too humid. We have a 3 hours layover, so we decide to get out of the airport and go have lunch in Port Royal, half an hour away on the coast. It's a bit of a ghost-town, once a very rich merchant harbor, destroyed at the end of the seventeenth century by a powerful earthquake. It looks like it never really recovered… We eat lunch in a small fish-restaurant, famous for its snapper. But I eat jerk chicken because I am picky with my fish, and the jerk-spices here are amazing! Of course we drink some Red Stripe beers, and Simon and myself decide it's time to find some weed. It does not take long before we hit the jackpot: literally on the side of the local Police station, along the seaside, there are some barracks and shacks; inside a group of Rastas is busy cleaning and chopping weed and rolling it up in small balls, using rolling papers as containers. We ask if we can buy some, and the guys are thrilled. It's cheap, less than 1 Euro per gram. But it's a bit bitter, very leafy, and we enjoy it just because it's been a while since we smoked in Amsterdam! Some of the Rastas in the back are smoking crack cocaine in a glass pipe, the smell is terribly sour. They ask if we like some, and we politely tell them we are just here for the ganja; they nod, and scream "Jah Rastafari"! We sit and smoke a joint with them, and chat a bit about the local weed, and the cops. It's incredible that this is all happening next to the Police station. We leave as soon as the joint is over, and we go back to the restaurant to join the rest of the crew. It's time to get back to the airport and catch a Jamaican Airlines flight to Montego Bay, where our local contacts are waiting. The flight is really short, under half hour, and we arrive in MoBay before sunset. Bigga, Shanti, Nampo and Taleban are waiting for us and it's great to see them again; Arjan and myself spent some crazy days with these guys not long ago, during our scouting trips on the island. These guys are a tight crew, and they are going to take care of us during the next days of this filming trip. Nampo is a older Rasta, wise man, with lots of contacts and very respected. Taleban, his friend, is a grower and a smuggler, a real pirate and one of the funniest guys we ever had with us during our expeditions. Bigga is our driver/bodyguard, he's a man of the road and he knows who and what you need to know to keep us safe. Shanti is a local singer, a reggae artist with an amazing talent and a great personality. I know him since he was 10 years old, back in 1994, when I spent a few weeks near where he lived with his father (the man supplying me with fine herb at the time). It was really special to find Shanti during our scouting trips back in July, he's now a grown up man… and I am getting old! Shanti will come along and make sure the soundtrack of our travels is inspiring and inspired. We get the cars, two Toyota Fortuner, and we load up the mountain of gear we are carrying. Then we drive down to Negril in the sunset light, and when we arrive it's already dark. We decide to spend the first night at the Blue Cave Castle, a really cozy place on the rocky cliffs of Negril. It's another true 1994-flashback for me, this is one of the places where I stayed when I was a 20-years-old ganja-traveler, already a Strain Hunter without knowing it…. Of course to make the flashback even more intense the same room where I slept then is available, so I take it. It still looks the same. We are tired from the long travel, and we decide to go for some food. Unfortunately the chef is sick, so we decide to find something not too far away. We hit a jerk-chicken stand by the side of the road and we eat like there's no tomorrow. After a few Red Stripes and a few joints we go back to the hotel, where we smoke some good amount of high-grade weed, and some "gum", the local finger-hash. The weed is definitely an indica-cross, it tastes sweet and strong, and they say it's from a site not too far from where we are. We make a plan for tomorrow, and we go to sleep. Jamaica is great. It's a true privilege to be here again. Jah Bless! And now we are back with MisterX pics, the man is a true artist..... enjoy! Spanish/Nat A deputy commander of Croatia's largest concentration camp was extradited from Argentina on Wednesday, to face trial in his homeland for alleged war crimes. His extradition follows a television programme broadcast in April, which revealed Dinko Sakic's role as a senior officer at Jasenovac concentration camp during World War II. Sakic is blamed for the deaths of thousands of Serbs, Gypsies and Jews between 1941 and 1945 when Croatia was ruled by the Nazi-backed Ustasha regime. Tight security surrounded Buenos Aires' Ezeiza international airport on Wednesday, as authorities heeded to public pressure and kicked out an alleged war criminal. The Lufthansa plane sat on the tarmac waiting to carry year old Dinko Sakic out of Argentina and back to his native Zagreb in Croatia, where he is due to face war criminal charges. Sakic was expelled from Argentinian soil after allegations that he was involved in the deaths of thousands of prisoners of war more than fifty years ago in Croatia. A television programme broadcast in April this year identified him as a deputy commander of Jasenovac concentration camp in Croatia, when the country was ruled by the brutal Nazi backed Ustasha regime. Thousands of Serbs, Gypsies and Jews were sent to this so-called Auschwitz of the Balkans to meet their death. An estimated 700-thousand people were murdered at Jasenovac. Public outrage and pressure from Croatia, Israel and the U-S for him to be brought to trial prompted Argentinian authorities to send him back to Croatia and face charges in court. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I want to tell you that this concludes the extradition procedure for Mr Sakic. In a few minutes he will get onto a Lufthansa plane that will take him first to Frankfurt and then to Zagreb." SUPER CAPTION: Hernan Bernasconi, Judge Sakic has publicly denied responsibility for the deaths of concentration camp prisoners. He claimed on television that those under his command died of natural causes. Sakic smiled and appeared calm and relaxed as he was led by authorities onto the plane. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "He is calm and he always wanted to go to Croatia to clarify the facts." SUPER CAPTION: Miguel Angel Rossi, Dinko Sakic's lawyer Sakic boarded the flight bound for Frankfurt, shortly before 2000 GMT. He is expected to arrive in Croatia on Thursday, but at this stage no date has been fixed for his trial. French/Nat A Serb former mayor of the Croatian town of Vukovar made his first appearance before the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Friday. Slavko Dokmanovic pleaded innocent to charges that he took part in the torture and massacre of 260 non-Serb men in 1991. Dokmanovic was arrested last Friday in the eastern Slavonia region of Croatia in a carefully-planned U-N operation. The latest charges brought before the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was against a Serb former mayor of the Croatian town of Vukovar. Slavko Dokmanovic was arrested last Friday - he arrived at the tribunal in The Hague a week later. He has been charged with taking part in the torture and massacre of 260 non-Serb men in 1991. According to the indictment, Dokmanovic and others took about 260 men from Vukovar hospital to a farm building in Ovcara where they beat the men for several hours. The men were then taken in groups of 10 to 20 to a nearby woody ravine, where they were allegedly executed by forces commanded by Dokmanovic. During the 25-minute hearing, Dokmanovic said "not guilty" six times as the presiding judge asked him for his plea on the indictment's counts. No trial date was immediately set. Dokmanovic's six-count war crimes and crimes against humanity indictment was kept secret until his controversial arrest. His lawyer claims his client was snatched by men wearing ski masks who handcuffed him, slipped a hood over his head and drove him to a plane which flew him to The Hague. Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Louise Arbour this week denied that the arrest was illegal and said that she would use similar tactics again if it would result in arrests. The tribunal has indicted 75 suspects but has just nine in custody. However, after Friday's hearing, Dokmanovic' lawyer said he would seek his client's immediate release because he had been illegally "kidnapped" by the U-N. SOUNDBITE: (French) "General Djukic, who was the kidnapper of Saravejo. Kidnapping became the way to take the men. Now we will see what they will do in the future." SUPER CAPTION: Toma Fila, Defence Lawyer Dokmanovic's arrest last Friday by U-N officials in the eastern Slavonia region of Croatia caused uproar in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The Yugoslav government has strongly criticised the arrest of Dokmanovic, saying it could have "serious consequences" for the peace process. The former mayor stands accused with three other men - all officers of the Yugoslav People's Army. They are still at large - it is thought they are living in Yugoslavia, which has so far made no move to hand them over to the tribunal. The massacre followed a devastating Serb bombardment of Vukovar during the war that raged between Serb forces and Croatia following Croatia's June 1991 declaration of independence from the former Yugoslavia. The film talks about the participants' experiences and opinions on the workings of the Hague Tribunal and about the original judgments against the Croatian Generals, who expect the ICTY Appeal Chamber to deliver its decision in December 2012. All the participants in this documentary have followed closely the work of the ICTY Tribunal for many years and conclude that the court proceedings demonstrate failings of an ad hoc court and that the judgment against the Croatian Generals dated 15th April 2011 was delivered on the basis of inadequately confirmed and inadequately legally relevant evidence. They talk of the repercussions a confirmation of the original judgment against Gotovina and Markac might have upon Croatia, especially those allegations dealing with criminal enterprise and deportations of Serbs during the military operation "Storm" in August 1995, which liberated Croatian territory from Serb occupation.
